Essential accessories for Canon EOS XS or 1000D
02.07.09
Canon XS rebel (in US), or Canon 1000D is one of the best and affordable digital SLRs for people just move to digital SLRs from point and shoot cameras. The most essential accessories for this camera are:
- Lenses: The kit lens Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS of Canon XSi is very good according to many reviews. For a good review see photozone. It is a four-stop image stabilized lens. The second lens you need is a telephoto lens. You have many choices here . But you can start with the most affordable Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS which is also a very good lens (for a review). You might also want to get Canon 50mm f/1.8 which is cheap, sharp and also a nice portrait lens.
- An extra battery: Canon XSi uses a Canon LP-E5 battery pack. Many people prefer a battery grip which provide more battery power and also work as a vertical grip. Here is the link for Canon BG-E5 battery grip for Canon XS. Since this camera is really light, the grip will provide better balance for a heavy lens.
- Digital SLR bags: many people like the photo backpack. Here is the link to Canon Deluxe photo backpack 200EG ($35 at amazon, a great price!) If you like a compact bag, Lowpro Rezo TLZ10 is an excellent one.
- Filters: circular polarizer is one of the most useful filters.
- SDHC/ SD Memory cards:
You need at least two memory cards with at least 4G each, in case one is fail. Canon XS uses SD/SDHC card. The recommend brands are lexar, SanDisk or Kingston. There are many counterfeit memory cards on the market, read how to identify the fake memory cards.
- External flash: Canon 430EX speedlite is sufficient.
- Tripod: Bogen Manfrotto 190XPROB and Bogen-Manfrotto 322RC2 ball head.
- Monopod: monopod is great for traveling especially hiking, it can used only for stabilizing the camera but also as a hiking stick.
- Canon Remote Switch RS60 E3 This remote is necessary if you want to take some long exposure photos.
